Abstract:
In order to explore the effect of different types of phytogenic antioxidants on the preservation of Taihu pig semen at room temperature, the two commonly used antioxidants, curcumin and β-carotene, were selected. They were added at different concentrations (curcumin: 0, 3, 6, 9 µg·mL
−1; β-carotene: 0, 10, 20, 40 µg·mL
−1) to the semen diluent of Taihu pig. The sperm vitality, plasma membrane integrity rate and acrosome integrity rate were detected by using the visual observation, hypotonic swelling method and Wright-Giemsa staining method on the 1 st, 3 rd, 5 th and 7 th day of preservation at 17 °C. The results showed that the addition of certain concentrations of curcumin and β-carotene could significantly improve the sperm quality, with the optimal concentrations being 6 µg·mL
−1 for curcumin and 20 µg·mL
−1 for β-carotene.
