Abstract:
In order to select the plant essential oils that have a good fumigation and repellent effect on
Lasioderma serricorne, and to evaluate whether they have any adverse impact on the chemical composition of cigar tobacco leaves. In this study, four plant essential oils with relatively high fumigation activity against adult
L. serricorne were first screened from seven plant essential oils. Their fumigation toxicity and repellent rates against adult
L. serricorne were then determined, and the two most effective oils were used to fumigate cigar tobacco leaves to evaluate their effects on six main chemical components of the leaves. The results showed that the corrected mortality rates of larvae
L. serricorne after 48 hours of exposure to four out of seven essential oils(tea tree oil, orange oil,
Litsea cubeba oil, and oregano oils)were all above 70%, and could be used for subsequent experments; all four essential oils exhibited good fumigation and repellent activities against adult
L. serricorne. Among them, tea tree oil exhibited the strongest fumigation toxicity, with a 24 h median lethal concentration(LC
50)of 15.410 μL·L
−1 and a 48 h LC
50 of 11.079 μL·L
−1. The weakest fumigation toxicity at 24 h was observed with oregano oil(LC
50 = 21.012 μL·L
−1), while the weakest fumigation toxicity at 48 h was observed with
Litsea cubeba oil(LC
50 = 15.109 μL·L
−1). Oregano oil demonstrated the strongest repellent activity, achieving a repellency rate of 93.33% after 1 h and 46.67% after 8 h. This was followed by orange oil, which achieved a repellency rate of 76.67% after 1 h and 53.33% after 8 h. Based on comprehensive evaluation, tea tree oil and orange oil were selected for the tobacco quality assessment experiment. The results showed that, fumigation with tea tree oil and orange oil had no significant effects on the contents of reducing sugars, total sugars, total alkaloids, total nitrogen, potassium, and chloride in cigar tobacco leaves. In conclusion, tea tree oil and orange oil possess both favorable fumigation insecticidal activity and tobacco leaf safety, demonstrating potential for application in the control of
L. serricorne during cigar tobacco leaf storage.
