    Screening Test on the Introduction of New Watermelon Varieties with Characteristics in Guangxi

    • In order to screen out the watermelon varieties with characteristics suitable for planting in Guangxi, the yield and quality traits of 30 introduced varieties of watermelon with characteristics (including 14 varieties with yellow flesh and 16 varieties with red flesh) were comprehensively evaluated. The results showed that the annual average yield per unit area of 21 watermelon varieties was higher than that of the control variety Xiaoling, among which 12 varieties with yellow flesh increased by 3.7%-33.0% and 9 varieties with red flesh increased by 4.6%-21.1%, with good yield. There were 28 varieties with the content of central sugar higher than 10.0%, which had good flesh quality and taste. Based on the yield per unit area, the content of central sugar and other commodity indicators, 21 watermelon varieties suitable for cultivation in Guangxi were selected, including 12 varieties with yellow flesh and 9 varieties with red flesh. The growers could choose the appropriate varieties for cultivation according to the planting objectives and market demand.
