Research progress on biology, reproductive biology and nutrition of Spinibarbus caldwelli

Spinibarbus caldwelli is mainly distributed in Fujian, Guangdong and Zhejiang provinces. Its meat is delicious and has certain medicinal value. It has strong disease resistance and is easy to breed and transport, it is an economic freshwater fish with great development potential. In recent years, the demand of Spinibarbus caldwelli is increasing in domestic market, and the market prospect is broad, but there are some problems, such as unclear feed formula, low hatching rate of fertilized eggs and low survival rate of seedlings, etc. , it restricted the large-scale breeding of Spinibarbus caldwelli. This paper introduces the biological characteristics of Spinibarbus caldwelli, including its morphology, living habits and feeding habits, the advances in reproductive biology（including natural reproduction, gonadal differentiation, embryonic development, artificial reproduction, secondary reproduction and interspecific hybridization）and nutrition are reviewed, it is expected to provide a reference for the breeding of new strains（species）of Spinibarbus caldwelli, the promotion of large-scale breeding and the development of its special formulated feed.
